THE FIRST PVC
RECIPIENT : MAJ.SOMNATH SHARMA
Parakramo vijayate(valour triumps),proved
right on the unfatefull dusk of 3rd NOVEMBER 1947 mere 79 days into the bliss of
independence and indian boys were up on arms showing the mettle of Indian Army
the joy of independence dimmed , as Maj. Somnath Sharma of the 4th
battalion of Kumaon Regiment and his men undertook what became history and gave
India its first Face of Valour.
Tensions had already imerged in the valleys
as pakistan tred to push its lashkars into the indian side with an intension to
occupy the heaven of this earth,unknown of the fearless men they decided to go
againt arround 1600hrs Maj.Sharma was heavly fired upon with LMG suddenly the
“innocent kashmiri refugees” (tribals in disguise) removed thier weapons under
thier firanas and showered bullets on the brave men kumaonese beat off the
first wave only to attract more intense succession,Maj. SOMNATH SHARMA called for an air
and artillary support wich came heavily in no time from the 13 field battery of
howitzers but that didn’t helped much as the men were heavily outnumbered in
the ratio of 1:10, he asked for reinforcements as ammunitions were running
pereliously low before the reinforcements could reach him the brave Maj. Was
martyred while helping LMG no.2 with magazines.
His love for the motherland and the valour
flowing in his blood kept him fighting the odds which any normal human would
have given down to . Maj. Sharma’s body was found 3 days later although it was
disfigured beyond imagination, his body was later iddentified by means of the
leather holster of his pistol and a few pages of bhagwad gita in his breast
pocket
On 21 june 1950, Maj.Sharma’s award of PVC
was gazetted for his actions on 3 NOVEMBER
1947,defending the shrinagar airfield. This was the first time such
award was conferred since its inception

MOTHERLAND WAS 3 NOVEMBER AND ON THE VERY OCCASION IN 2017 WE SHOULD ACKNOWLEDGE THE
SACRIFICE MADE BY HIM .
