                                        Military Exercises of the Indian Army 2017
What are military exercises?
 A military exercise or war game is the employment of military resources in training for military operations, either exploring the effects of warfare or testing strategies without actual combat. This also serves the purpose of ensuring the combat readiness of garrisoned or deployable forces prior to deployment from home base or home station.
Types of military exercises
1. Field Exercises: It is the typical full-scale rehearsal of military maneuvers as              practice for warfare.
2. Command Post Exercise: A Command Post  Exercise (CPX) typically focuses on the battle readiness of staffs or one of its components at any level.
3.  Simulation: This type of exercises allows commanders to manipulate models through possible scenarios in military planning. This is also called warfare simulation. In recent years it is assisted by computer simulation.

4. Joint exercise: Several different armed forces of the same nation training together are described as having a joint exercise

5. Combined exercise :Those involving forces of multiple nations are described as having a combined exercise.

This year, the Indian Army participated in over 16 national and international military exercises with friendly foreign countries to boost military ties and relations among them. Here is a review of all the exercises held by the Army in 2017. We suggest you make note of all these exercises as this could be asked in the defence written exams

1. KHANJAR IV   : Exercise Khanjar-IV was conducted in Kyrgyzstan from 20 Feb – 05 Mar 2017. Twenty Special Forces personnel participated from both sides .
   
2. SURYA KIRAN XI:  The eleventh edition of joint military exercise between India and Nepal held in Pithoragarh area of Uttarakhand between 7 – 20 march.
 3. Al Nagah-Ii II: The joint military exercise between India and Oman held in the Dhauladhar Ranges in Bakloh belt of Himachal Pradesh from 7- 10 march.


4. Bold Kurukshetra: From March 4 to 21, the armies of India and Singapore conducted the 11th bilateral armor exercise.
     
5. Nomadic Elephant XII:  The twelfth edition Indo-Mongolian Joint Military held at Vairengte in Mizoram from 5 to 18 April 2017.
6. Thar Shakti:  The Army exercise culminated between 17 April to 17 May in Mahajan  Firing Field of Thar desert area in Bikaner.

7. Maitree :  The 15-day long  military training exercise between the Indian and Thai army held from July 3 to July 17 at Bakloh in Himachal Pradesh.
   8. Surya Kiran XII: The Joint military exercise held at Nepal Army Battle School at Saljhandi  from September 3 to 16 had around 350 troops from each side.
   
9. Yudh Abhyas: The 13th edition of joint  exercise between India and US was held at Joint Base Lewis McChord, Washington,     
10.  Mitra shakti: The two-week long joint military exercise involving India and Sri Lanka held in pune, India from 13- 25 October.
 
11. Indra: The first tri-service armed Forces (Army, Navy, & Air Force) exercise INDRA 2017 between India and Russia held at the 249th Combined Army Range Sergeevisky and in Sea of Japan near Vladivostok from 19-29 October.  12. Prabal Dostyk II: The bilateral  exercise  between India and Kazakhstan began at Bakloh, Himachal Pradesh from 2-15 November. ‘Prabal Dostyk’ means ‘Robust Friendship’.
 
13. Sampriti VII: Joint Indo-Bangladesh Training Exercise was culminated at Counter Insurgency & Jungle Warfare School, Vairengte in Mizoram from 6-11 November.
 14. Danx: The Defence of Andaman and Nicobar Islands Exercise was conducted under aegis of Andaman & Nicobar Command from 20 to 24 November 2017.

15. Imbax I: The first India-Myanmar Bilateral Military Exercise 2017  was held at Joint Warfare Centre at the Umroi Joint Training Node in Meghalaya from 20-25 November.

16. Ajeya Warrior: The Combined Military exercise between India and the UK was held at Mahajan Field Firing Range near Bikaner of Rajasthan from 1- 14 December.
